Audio Science Academy (Spanish): ITB mixing
Presented in Spanish: Music mixing is sometimes seen more as a technical hurdle at the end of a project rather than the creative process it is. In this session, producer and engineer Juan de Dios Martín will share his approach to ITB mixing, focusing on ideas and strategies for both audio engineers and musicians that work on their own productions.

Audio Science Academy: Distributed Mode Loudspeakers (DMLs)
The Distributed Mode Loudspeaker – A New Class of Radiator for Sound Reinforcement

Distributed Mode Loudspeakers (DMLs) utilize bending wave modal physics to propagate wide directivity, predominantly diffuse acoustic energy into a given space. Unlike traditional loudspeaker systems, the net effect is a single, large drive unit that radiates audio over almost eight octaves in a very wide and diffuse manner. In this talk, Tectonic Audio Labs VP of Engineering Tim Whitwell will explain how a DML works, what the radiaton from a DML looks like, and the benefits this brings to sound reinforcement applications.

Audio Science Academy: The Secret Life of Low Frequencies
In “The Secret Life of Low Frequencies”, Bruce Black explores what can occur in the all-important low frequency realm, and why it happens. Using more than a decade’s worth of data collected from the acoustic analyses of rooms ranging from large world class mix stages down to small home studios converted from spare bedrooms, he shares the surprising discoveries and obscure answers to sometimes baffling questions. The low frequency region, below 300 Hz. or so, is where the bulk of our perception of sonic quality takes place. It is also an unforgiving territory where there are many complications and pitfalls that can damage the sound in the critical acoustic spaces where we do our work - our mix rooms, control rooms, studios and the like. In designing a room’s acoustics, it’s easy to stumble and fail. Some of what he will present goes against the common wisdom, and some may be controversial. But he will give you plenty to think about.

A moving microphone technique will be introduced and evaluated for measurement of spatial average in small rooms. Consistency of measurements will be assessed including measurements made by multiple experimenters. Accuracy of this method will be investigated in comparison with spatial average calculated from a large number of static microphone positions. A survey of measurement techniques will be presented and compared to the same spatial average.
