Audio Science Academy (Spanish): ITB mixing
Presented in Spanish: Music mixing is sometimes seen more as a technical hurdle at the end of a project rather than the creative process it is. In this session, producer and engineer Juan de Dios Martín will share his approach to ITB mixing, focusing on ideas and strategies for both audio engineers and musicians that work on their own productions.

Control Room Academy: Masterclass with John Storyk, Eddie Kramer & Elliot Scheiner
Over the past fifty years Recording Studio Control Room Design has been on one of the wildest rides one could imagine. Have these C.R. designs been driven by extraordinary technological advances? Have they evolved as a function of changes in the way music is delivered? Have they been driven by individuals constantly pushing the boundaries of esthetics and vibe while simultaneously demanding extraordinary excellence for internal room acoustics?
Architect/Acoustician John Storyk will trace the past 50 years of C.R. design evolution, which coincidently mirrors the length of his career, and also take a peek into what the next 50 years might have in store for us. From Electric Lady Studios (1969) to Jungle City Studios (2011) and beyond, this ride is certain to get even wilder and more exciting.
John Storyk has guided WSDG through nearly 3500 studio designs around the globe. He is a visiting professor at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, and co-author/principal professor of Berklee’s new Masters On Line Course in Architectural Acoustics for Studios.

Audio Science Academy: Distributed Mode Loudspeakers (DMLs)
The Distributed Mode Loudspeaker – A New Class of Radiator for Sound Reinforcement

Distributed Mode Loudspeakers (DMLs) utilize bending wave modal physics to propagate wide directivity, predominantly diffuse acoustic energy into a given space. Unlike traditional loudspeaker systems, the net effect is a single, large drive unit that radiates audio over almost eight octaves in a very wide and diffuse manner. In this talk, Tectonic Audio Labs VP of Engineering Tim Whitwell will explain how a DML works, what the radiaton from a DML looks like, and the benefits this brings to sound reinforcement applications.

Audio Science Academy: The Secret Life of Low Frequencies
In “The Secret Life of Low Frequencies”, Bruce Black explores what can occur in the all-important low frequency realm, and why it happens. Using more than a decade’s worth of data collected from the acoustic analyses of rooms ranging from large world class mix stages down to small home studios converted from spare bedrooms, he shares the surprising discoveries and obscure answers to sometimes baffling questions. The low frequency region, below 300 Hz. or so, is where the bulk of our perception of sonic quality takes place. It is also an unforgiving territory where there are many complications and pitfalls that can damage the sound in the critical acoustic spaces where we do our work - our mix rooms, control rooms, studios and the like. In designing a room’s acoustics, it’s easy to stumble and fail. Some of what he will present goes against the common wisdom, and some may be controversial. But he will give you plenty to think about.

My high end monitors go down to 30Hz yet when I make the bass and kick sound the way I really want them to, my mixes are way too bass heavy during the car test.” “My center image is really weak and panning placement is vague.” “I’ve added two powerful subwoofers and although it seems to have extended the low end, I still have a hard time figuring out the bass.” “I had my control room analyzed and spent quite a bit of money on acoustic treatment with bass traps but I’m still not confident about my mixes.”

Measurement & Optimization: Choosing the Right Measurement Mic
Measurement microphones are optimized for a flat frequency response over a frequency range of 10Hz to 20kHz but that is only a single aspect for making the right choice.

There are other microphone specifications of the same or even higher importance such as microphone distortion, dynamic range, maximum SPL, amongst others we have to look into.

Let’s assume, we’ve chosen the right (probably) state of the art measurement mic. Does the measurement chain fit? Can we get the measurement results we are supposed to get or are we measuring crap?

In-Ear Monitoring: Advantages & Personal Monitor Mixing
In-ear monitors are known to help improve the overall sound quality by dramatically reducing noise on stage. However, many musicians complain about poor audio, unfamiliar / isolated sound, even dizziness which can make the transition to IEMs frustrating. In this workshop, we will explain the dynamics of listening with IEMs, how a qualified personal monitoring system can help overcome these issues, by creating an individual mix using stereo effects and panning to re-create a three-dimensional, natural sound experience. Participants in the class will be able to create a 3D sound and compare for themselves.

At their best, personal monitor mixers make the worship music experience more enjoyable for both tech directors and musicians. We'll show how a musician-friendly, intuitive user interface for a personal mixer is key in avoiding tech-overload for musicians. Lastly, we will provide an overview on the importance of channel selection and what should be offered to musicians to keep them happy and in the flow so musicians can do what they are there to do—play music. A successful implementation of an IEM system should result in more playing enjoyment for the musician and more time for the tech engineer to concentrate on the FOH. If this isn’t the case, the IEM is not doing its job. This workshop will help you identify what you need to set up for success.

In-Ear Monitoring: IEM's: Protecting hearing while giving a balanced, clear mix
In-Ear Monitors are meant to protect hearing while giving a balanced, clear mix. But for this to happen, the sound engineer, the artist, and the in-ear manufacturer all must be on the same page. The artist has to want to listen at a lower volume level & the engineer needs to know the SPL that the artist is getting in the mix.

Andrew Bellavia, Director of Market Development for Knowles Electronics, and Dr. Michael Santucci, a dedicated advocate for hearing health and president of Sensaphonics will discuss how recent technology advances help protect hearing while giving a balanced, clear mix.

This session will be hosted by Mike Dias, the Executive Director of the In-Ear Monitor International Trade Organization.

Audio Education Academy: Unraveling Audio Networking
In today’s audio world, digital audio systems have surpassed people’s expectations and, dare we say, become the go-to systems over their more traditional counterparts. From their flexibility and ability to adapt according to the user’s needs (i.e., ranging from a personal home studio to major concert productions), these systems have proven to be reliable, functional and most importantly non-complicated to use. From minimizing set-up time to working with fewer cables, the biggest plus is you do not have to be an IT expert to use these systems. These technologies are so streamlined and ergonomic, no specialized knowledge is needed to work with them. On the contrary, as complex as these systems are, for the user they offer a high level of familiarity. This presentation will look into the advantages each system has to offer, what they are, where and how they are used, and answer any questions the participants have.

As an AVIXA Renewal Unit (RU) Provider, RME demonstrates its commitment to providing quality education and training for audiovisual professionals, including Certified Technology Specialist™ (CTS®) holders and the specialized designations /CTS®-D (Design) and CTS®-I (Installation). Measurement microphones are optimized for a flat frequency response over a frequency range of 10Hz to 20kHz but that is only a single aspect for making the right choice.

Let’s assume, we’ve chosen the right (probably) state of the art measurement mic. Does the measurement chain fit? Can we get the measurement results we are supposed to get or are we measuring crap?
